“Action has the power to override genetics.” — Ron Zeller
No matter what your age is, or your current physical condition, you still control, for the most part, your vitality, personal energy, and your feeling of being alive. While there are numerous influences that help determine your health, fitness and personal energy, including genetics, you can control most of it. You also control how you see yourself and how others perceive you.
This has been the central theme of both The Come Alive Project and it’s current iteration, SeniorFlow for well over a decade.
There seems to be a lot more emphasis on aging today, than when I started out. I am seeing more articles about aging and “ageism” today than I have ever seen in the past decade. “Ageism” has become a buzzword similar to all the other “isms” and I don’t particularly care for it. Why? Because I believe that yes, while people sometimes treat us differently because we are older, if it is a negative in our eyes, it is because we let it be.
People will treat us as they see us. If they see us a old, frail, weak and useless, the tendency might be to shy away or ignore us. But if they see us as vibrant, energetic, happy people, the trend might be more toward envy than disdain. As I have pointed out in the past, I like having others help me sometimes. I like the Senior Coffee discounts at the coffee shop. I enjoy Senior Discounts at restaurants. If that’s ageism, bring on more of it.
The point is that you can control what others think of you and the way they treat you by the way you come across to them through your appearance and your actions. Yes, genetics play an important part in your aging process, but most of the way you come across to others is well within your control.
You are capable of renewing your energy. Your health and your energy is to a large extent, under your control through what you eat, how you move your body, and how you sleep. You can be sedentary and allow yourself to decay or you can move and exercise your body and look and feel alive and vital. It’s up to you.
A lot of this is a result of whether you willing to BELIEVE you are capable of controlling your own level of Health, Fitness and Personal Energy. That’s the ATTITUDE or MINDSET side of what I call the Personal Energy equation. If you don’t believe it is possible, then you won’t take the action to make it happen. But when you see it happening around you, you begin to believe. That’s when you develop the capacity to make it happen.
You can improve your personal energy. You can improve your posture. You can improve the way you come across to your self in the mirror. You can improve the way others perceive you. You can be a part of helping others see the senior generations as a vibrant, healthy, energy filled community. But we all have to take action to make it happen.
“You’ll have the greatest amount of power over your health if you truly believe that you have a say about the degree of health you will enjoy. If you take full responsibility and live as if you are the cause of your energy, you have the maximum leverage regarding your health. You have choices, and what you choose matters.” — Ron Zeller, Aging or Ageless, p. 242.
