One of my favorite quotations is by the activist Howard Thurmon. It goes like this:
“Don’t ask what the world needs, ask what makes you come alive and go do it. What the world needs is more people who have come alive.”
What makes you feel alive? I mean really alive! Do you have a bucket list? What’s on it? What are some of the things you really want to do (or do again), but “haven’t gotten around to it” — yet. What do you tell yourself about why you don’t do whatever it happens to be. Too Old? No time? People would think I’m foolish? What reasons do you give yourself why you don’t or can’t do it.
Here’s a story that should make you rethink those reasons. One of the ladies in our retirement community used to sing and act in local theater productions, many years in the past. It was a dream of hers to perform again in a local theater production. Last Friday night she performed as a solo singer at a local theater production of the Songs of Mary Poppins. She was a hit. She figured out a way to do it, and DID IT. She told me that it made her feel “alive” again. Hmm. All this at age 95 and a half. Oh, and she did it again Saturday as part of the total package. Wow!
So ask yourself what makes you come alive, figure out how to do it, and go do it. No excuses. “What the world needs is more people who have come alive”. Particularly those of us in the Senior Community.
“It’s your life, wrap your arms around it.” — Elaine Penn
